Continue reading…

I sidste uge strejkede dommerne i Uganda.

Continue reading…

At the international level, we have in recent years witnessed that private sector activities in the global South are linked with the development agenda. This trend is also felt in Denmark. Danish Ethical Trading Initiative assists Danish companies to operate responsible in the global markets. I wrote and edited the Annual Report, 2014. See it here.

Rural communities in the Bagamoyo district of Tanzania are opposing a much-lauded sugar cane plantation project planned by a Swedish-owned company that has secured a lease of over 20,000 hectares of land for the next 99 years and which is about to push smallholder producers off their land. I contributed to the report and the campaign with case stories.

In 1994 up to a million people in Rwanda were killed over 100 days, approximately 20 per cent of Rwanda’s population, in the genocide against the Tutsis. Twenty years on and Rwanda has made remarkable progress in coming to terms with its past, but the scars of the past remain. These are some of the stories I wrote:
I never imagined it would be a close relative who would cause my children’d death
Everyone at that meeting never came back – I lost four children
We are all single mothers, together we are strong
I don’t know how I would afford my medicine without the cooperative and ActionAid

As per Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index for 2010 Uganda ranked 127 of 178 countries and scored 2,6 points on a scale from zero to 10. Corruption runs deep and at all levels. Yet, many individuals fight corruption at the grass root level. They know and feel the negative implications of corruption and they take it upon themselves to work against it. In some cases they keep up the struggle regardless of death threats against them and their families. Together with photographer Stephen Wandera, I documented their battle. We collected their stories in this publication “Fighting corruption from below”.
